For the first time ever, women filmmakers are dominating the Best Director category. This year’s female noms include ChloĂ© Zhao for âNomadlandâ and Emerald Fennell for “Promising Young Woman“âboth of which are also nominated for Best Motion Picture Drama. Regina King joins the two women for her directorial work for “One Night In Miami.” David Fincher for âMankâ and Aaron Sorkin for âThe Trial of the Chicago 7â were also nominated in this category, but fall in the minority despite historically being a male-driven category.
Other highlights include noms for Viola Davis and the late Chadwick Boseman in “Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom,” and Leslie Odom as a double-nominee for his portrayal of Sam Cooke in ‘One Night In Miami’ and best original song from the movie.
In a battle of the streaming giants, Netflix leads the pack with a whopping 42 noms with films like âThe Queenâs Gambitâ and âThe Crown,” with Amazon and Hulu trailing behind with 10 each.

Of course, you can’t mention the noms without acknowledging the buzz-worthy blockbusters who seemingly got snubbed. Spike Lee’s “Da 5 Bloods” starring late Chadwick Boseman didn’t get any nods, neither did Zendaya for her critically-acclaimed roles in “Euphoria” and Netflix’s “Malcolm & Marie.” Despite Michaela Coel’s “I May Destroy You” series shining a spotlight on sexual assault while sparking necessary dialogue surrounding the controversial topic, it got no nominationsâalong with the regal Shonda Rhimes’ series “Bridgerton” which got royally screwed as well.
The Golden Globes will air on February 28th at 5 p.m. PT on NBC. Below is the full list of nominees and tune in below to see what our Dish Nation hosts think about this year’s contenders!
