Red Table Talk is known for being the place to leave everything on the table, and that’s exactly what 20-year-old Willow Smith did during the most recent episode. The “Transparent Soul” singer came out as polyamorous in front of her mother Jada Pinkett-Smith and grandmother Adrienne “Gammy” Banfield Norris.
Willow shared that she prefers polyamory—defined as being involved in more than one romantic relationship at the same time—because it offers “the freedom to be able to create a relationship style that works for you and not just stepping into monogamy because that’s what everyone around you says is the right thing to do,” she shared with her mom and grandmother. As she believes monogamy often leads to infidelity, Willow shared that she prefers the honesty and transparency of a polyamorous relationship.
“So, I was like, how can I structure the way that I approach relationships with that in mind?,” Willow asked—adding that “doing research into polyamory, the main reasons why monogamous relationships—or why marriage, why divorces happen—is infidelity.”
Although Jada was the most supportive of Willow’s relationship preference, her grandmother Gammy—who shared that she once considered exploring polyamory— wasn’t sold on the concept that she perceives as “really all just centered around sex.” Willow countered Gammy’s sex-centered claim by revealing that although she’s the only polyamorous person in her friend group, she has the least sex compared to her peers.
