Meghan Markle hates to burst your bubble, media outlets (not us, obviously), but she’s not Straight Outta Compton.
On the first episode of her new Spotify podcast Archetypes, the Duchess of Sussex chatted with bestie Serena Williams about the media incorrectly reporting where she’s from. Back in 2017 prior to the Royal Wedding, several media outlets made mention of Prince Harry’s bride-to-be being “straight outta Compton,” to which Meghan jokingly alluded to confusing her with proud Compton-native, Serena.
“This morning, I was saying to Harry: ‘Do you remember when they said, ‘Harry’s girl is straight outta Compton?’ I was like, ‘are they talking about Serena?’ ” Markle jokingly told Serena. “I’m like, I’m not from Compton, I’ve never lived in Compton, my mom doesn’t live in Compton, but by the way, what’s wrong with Compton? My girl Serena’s from there,” she said candidly.
Although she laughed off the media’s misrepresentation of her roots, she also subtly addressed the implied negative connotation surrounding Compton. “What’s wrong with Compton,” Meghan asked, to which Serena chimed in about how proud she is to be from the area, alongside fellow natives, Kevin Costner and Dr. Dre.
