Chaka Khan sure knows how to hold a grudge because after nearly 20 years she’s still upset over the way Kanye West sampled her voice on “Through the Fire” for his 2003 hit song “Through the Wire.”
While promoting her new song “Woman Like Me” on Good Day DC, Chaka was asked if Yé, formerly known as Kanye West, ever reached out to her to discuss sampling her voice on his song and she said no—very diva-like and shadily, of course. She went on to explain why she’s still annoyed with how Yé sped up her voice on “Through the Wire,” making her sound like a chipmunk.
“I’ve not heard from him and I’m not looking to hear from him. No. That’s what he did. That’s what he did with his music, you know. I was upset about sounding like a chipmunk but, you know, because he didn’t put that when he asked to sample my song, ” Khan shared—adding that “Kanye didn’t mention that he was gonna speed it up, you know, three times its normal speed. Had he, I would’ve had something to say.”
This isn’t the first time Chaka has talked about her gripe with Yé, as in 2019 she told Watch What Happens Live’s Andy Cohen that Yé pulled at her heartstrings when he said “Through the Fire” was “instrumental” in his healing process after his horrific car accident left his jaw wired shut. However, Chaka said she was “pissed” when she heard his version because if she knew he was going to speed up her voice, she was have said “hell no” to his sample request!
