Emmys across the board for RuPaul’s Drag Race host, RuPaul!
Despite white actors sweeping all 12 of the lead and supporting categories during last night’s 2021 Emmys, sparking the trending hashtag #EmmysSoWhite, RuPaul, 60, racked up and made history as the most Emmy wins by a black artist. After snagging the award for Best Competition Series, RuPaul’s Emmy wins totaled 11—setting a new record for black artists to come. RuPaul aka “Mama Ru” thanked the courageous contestants and encouraged the youth to live in their truth.
“Thanks to all our lovely children on our show from around the world,” RuPaul said in his acceptance speech. “They are so gracious to tell their stories of courage and how to navigate this difficult life, even more difficult today. This is for you.” He continued, “and for you kids out there watching, you have a tribe that is waiting for you,” he added. “We are waiting for you, baby! Come on to mama Ru! Thank you so much! Thank you!”
RuPaul’s 11th win not only beat out previous record-holder and cinematographer Donald A. Morgan, but snagged the award from fellow competition series The Voice, The Amazing Race, Nailed It!, Top Chef, and The Voice.
Another record-shattering win by a black artist included I May Destroy You creator Michaela Coel who became the first black woman to win an Emmy for Outstanding Writing For A Limited Or Anthology Series For The British Drama.
