When Akon says he has the keys to the city, he means that quite literally!
The “Right Now” rapper and singer has secured a $6 billion construction contract from KE International—a US-based engineering and consulting firm—to build Akon City in Senegal. With completion slated in two phases, 2023 and 2029, the AKOIN cryptocurrency-powered metropolis will be the 2nd Leader in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED)-certified city to go green with 100% renewable energy. Mwale Medical and Technology City (MMTC) is the first African-based green city located in West Kenya.
Construction plans include roads, a hospital campus, mall, police station, schools and universities, and a power-plant, along with parks, stadiums, and much more. In addition, Senegalese President Macky Sall will provide tax breaks for Akon City to encourage the investment of businesses.
