WILLOW SMITH CONFESSES TO SELF-HARMING AFTER ‘WHIP MY HAIR’ FAME

Back in 2010, Willow Smith took the world by storm with the debut of her hit single “Whip My Hair.”
And while the 10-year-old became an instant media darling, inside she was battling a much darker issue.
On the second episode of her new Facebook show Red Table Talk with mom Jada Pinkett Smith, Willow revealed she began cutting herself after the “insanity” of the spotlight took its toll.
“It was after that whole ‘Whip My Hair’ thing and I had just stopped doing singing lessons and I was kind of just in this gray area of, ‘Who am I? Do I have a purpose? Is there anything I can do besides this?’” the now 17-year-old said.
The instant fame was too much for the young tween to handle and she began to self-harm.
“After the tour and the promotion and all of that, they wanted me to finish my album,” she continued. “And I was like, I’m not gonna do that. And after all of that kinda settled down and it was like a kind of lull, I was just listening to a lot of dark music. It was just so crazy and I was plunged into this black hole, and I was cutting myself.”
The news came as a shock to Jada and Willow’s grandmother Adrienne Banfield-Jones, who immediately wanted to know where exactly she injured herself.
“On my wrist. I mean, you can’t even see it but there’s still a little something there,” Willow said. “But like, totally lost my sanity for a moment there. I never talk about it because it was such a short weird point in my life. But you have to pull yourself out of it.”
Willow finished off by saying she eventually stopped when she realized what she was doing was “actually psychotic.”
