W. KAMAU BELL TALKS RACISM IN AMERICA
Tuesday, Apr 24, 2018

“This is our blackest season ever.”

After talking with the KKK in season one, and going to an Alt-Right convention in season two, W. Kamau Bell decided to keep things lighter as he jumped into season 3 of his Emmy Award-winning CNN docu-series “United Shades of America.”

Bell joked to Dish Nation:

“This year I decided to take a break, so I just went to Morehouse. We’re doing an episode about HBCU’s… so I decided to go see some happy black people after all the pain I’ve seen the first two seasons.”

But that doesn’t mean Bell won’t address more controversial issues currently facing the nation.

“The first episode this Sunday is about the US-Mexico border. So I went down to Arizona, I went on both sides of the wall – there is already a wall there, you can tell the President there is a wall there right now – and we talked about life on both sides of the border.”

While at Dish, Bell also offered his perspective on the recent incident at a Philadelphia Starbucks in which two black men were arrested after refusing to leave when they did not make a purchase.

“This is not just a Starbucks issue about one Starbucks in Philadelphia – this is an American issue about racism.”

Racist incidents at coffee shops are nothing new to Bell, it’s something he’s all too familiar with. Bell told Dish about his own experience at a Berkeley, California cafe in 2015…

“I was asked to leave a cafe – or told to leave a cafe – because I was talking to my wife. My wife is white. Apparently in Berkeley it’s illegal to talk to your white wife. Somebody knocked on the window and said ‘get out of here.'”

In light of the Starbucks incident, after Bell recounted his own experience at Elmwood Cafe, the coffee shop closed its doors last week.

But while one coffee shop closes, a new season of addressing the issues that unite and divide America is getting ready to begin, you can watch “United Shades of America” every Sunday on CNN.
