‘THERE ARE TIMES WHEN YOU CAN’T STAND EACH OTHER’—MICHELLE OBAMA GETS CANDID ABOUT MARRIAGE WITH BARACK OBAMA
Tuesday, Sep 8, 2020

On a recent episode of her Spotify podcast, Michelle Obama had a candid conversation about the struggles of marriage and the secret to maintaining a strong one. Chatting with podcast guest Conan O’Brien, Michelle said there were times in her marriage where she wanted to “push Barack out of the window.”

“You’ve got to know that there are going to be times, long periods of time, when you can’t stand each other … I said it, you know, on the book tour, as a joke,” she shared with Conan. “There were times that I wanted to push Barack out of the window, right. And I say that, because it’s like you’ve got to know the feelings will be intense. But that doesn’t mean you quit. And these periods can last a long time. They can last years.”

Despite the tough times, Michelle said she and the former president have a “very strong marriage,” and if she had walked away she would have “missed all the beauty, that was there as well.” She also spilled the tea on the secret to selecting a good marriage partner, which is to approach it like picking a basketball team.

“Because if you’re looking at a team, the people you want to win with, then number one you want everybody on your team to be strong … If we looked at marriage as a real team, you want your teammate to be a winner, then you want LeBron.”

What do you think of Michelle’s transparency about the trials and tribulations of marriage?
