THE 2020 EMMYS WILL GO VIRTUAL! ‘WATCHMEN’ LEADS WITH A WHOPPING 26 NOMS, ‘SUCCESSION’ & ‘OZARK’ TO FOLLOW
Tuesday, Jul 28, 2020

Despite being in the midst of a global pandemic, the show—the Emmys actually— must go on! Therefore, the nominations for this year’s first-ever virtual-edition of the 72nd Emmy Awards are in. The virtual announcement was hosted by Saturday Night Live veteran Leslie Jones, along with Josh Gad, Laverne Cox and Tatiana Maslany.

Keeping true to 2020’s theme of unpredictability, this year’s nominations were filled with some surprises. Zendaya nabbed a nom for Lead Actress in a Drama Series for her role in Euphoria while Issa Rae’s Insecure secured 8 noms including Best Comedy Series.

Now that the “watch has ended” for many of the previous year’s heavyweights, such as Game of Thrones who had 32 nominations and 12 wins last year, many of its categorical contenders are scheming to snag those top spots. This year’s frontrunner goes to the Regina King-led Watchmen series who leads this year’s nominations with a whopping 26 nods, with Succession and Ozark following with 18 each.

Talk show titan Jimmy Kimmel will host the 72nd Emmy Awards on Sunday, Sept. 20, from 8:00-11:00 p.m. ET on ABC.
