SPIKE LEE, REGINA KING, MAHERSHALA ALI & RAMI MALEK WIN BIG AT 2019 OSCARS
Monday, Feb 25, 2019

Last night’s star-studded Oscars was filled with surprises, monumental moments and historical wins!

With previously Oscar-nominated films such as Do The Right Thing and Driving Miss Daisy, Spike Lee finally snagged his very first Academy Award for BlacKkKlansman in the Best Adapted Screenplay category. Lee, who was met on stage with a bromance-style embrace from Samuel L. Jackson, attributed last night’s win to April Reign’s #OscarsSoWhite social movement.

Like Lee, Regina King also won the first Oscar of her career for Best Supporting Actress in If Beale Street Could Talk. She called the win “surreal” and gave a nod to James Baldwin which inspired the film’s adaptation.

“James Baldwin birthed this baby and Barry, you nurtured her, you surrounded her with so much love and support, so it’s appropriate for me to be standing here because I’m an example of what it looks like when support and love is poured into someone.”

Green Book racked up with three Oscars last night, including Mahershala Ali’s historical win for Best Supporting Actor donning him the first African-American male to win twice in this category. Rami Malek, who won Best Actor for his role as Freddy Mercury in Bohemian Rhapsody, paid homage to his Egyptian heritage in a heartfelt acceptance speech.

And although Ryan Coogler didn’t snag the Best Director award, Black Panther took home three Oscars making it the first Marvel film to win an Academy Award.

Below is a list of all the winners, and tune in to today’s Dish Nation to see what our hosts think!
