Ben E. King has passed away, reports have confirmed Friday morning. He was 76-years-old.
It appears King died at his home in New Jersey on Thursday, possibly following a battle with an unreported heart ailment.
Best known for his 1961 hit “Stand by Me,” the R&B singer was far from a one-hit wonder. He made a name for himself, albeit briefly, as the frontman of the Drifters before going solo in 1960. In total, between his solo and group efforts, King garnered five number one hits which also included “Save The Last Dance For Me” and “There Goes My Baby.”
