Sandra Bullock recently admitted to USA Today that she almost gave up her acting career because of sexism in Hollywood.
“My career has been a domino effect of people who said, ‘I would like this person to fill this role,’ ” she said, “And not just in the industry, but people in my life. My mother raised me like, ‘You don’t need to get married, you forge your own path. You make your own money, and be your own person.’ And I literally went out into the world thinking there was no disparity, that everyone was equal, and I can do whatever a man can do.”
The ‘Ocean’s 8′ star described what she called her “wake-up moment” and realized she was being discriminated for being a woman.
“I was like, ‘What is this feeling? Why do I feel so (expletive)?’ ‘Oh my God, I’m being treated this way because I have a vagina.’ ”
The actress explained that realizing this before was hard due to her upbringing.
“It was hard for me, because I walked with blinders on through life and got to where I (felt) like I was less than because I was a woman.”
This is when Bullock had the thought of stepping out of Hollywood, as she referred to her experience as a ‘hard pill to swallow.’ She has also been a victim of stalking and may be the reason she didn’t star in any movies for the past 3 years.
But, she has made her return to the screen to star in Ocean’s 8 which opens Friday!
