Quinta Brunson, Niecy Nash, Jennifer Coolidge, & More Women Have Big Wins at 2023 Emmys
Tuesday, Jan 16, 2024

Last night’s Emmys hosted by Anthony Anderson were in full swing and the women showed up and showed out with epic wins!

Quinta Brunson made history last night by being the first black woman to win Best Actress in a Comedy Series in more than 40 years since The Jeffersons star Isabel Sanford won back in 1981.

“I am so happy to be able to get this,” Brunson said in her acceptance speech—adding, “I love making Abbott Elementary so much and I am so happy to be able to live my dream and act out comedy.”
Niecy Nash won Best-supporting Actress in an Anthology Series for her role in Dahmer – Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story, and not only did she thank herself, but she also accepted the award (from The Jefferson’s Marla Gibbs and Quinta) for the “unheard, yet overpoliced” black women such as Glenda Cleveland (whom Niecy played in the series), Sandra Bland, and Breonna Taylor.
“I want to thank me, for believing in me and doing what they said I could not do,” she continued. “I want to say to myself in front of all you beautiful people, ‘Go, girl, with your bad self. You did that.’ Finally, I accept this award on behalf of every Black and Brown woman who have gone unheard, yet overpoliced, like Glenda Cleveland, like Sandra Bland, like Breonna Taylor!”

Sarah Snook snagged an Emmy for Lead Actress in a Drama for her role as Shiv Roy in Succession, which racked up six Emmys last night.

“Thanks to everyone who voted and for loving the show as much as we did as a cast making it and as a crew making it,” Snook told the audience. “We put our all into it and the bar was set so high. I think that’s what spurred us on from every department. We all gave it our best, led by [series creator] Jesse Armstrong and [director] Mark Mylod and my cast who I love so much and I’m going to miss.”

The Bear’s breakout star Ayo Edebiri won Best Supporting Actress In A Comedy Series and delivered a funny yet heartwarming acceptance speech about family.

“I’m so incredibly grateful for this, for so many reasons,” Ayo said, “but the main one is that this is a show about family and found family and real family and my parents are here tonight. I’m making them sit kinda far away because I’m a bad kid. But I love you guys so much, thank you so much for loving me and letting me feel beautiful and Black and proud of all of that.”
