Sunday’s MTV Movie Awards paid expected tribute to the most millennial-friendly big screen moments from the past year, but first time host Amy Schumer peppered her up-for-anything raunch with more classic emcee techniques that offered a fresh balance of old school charm and viral-worthy shock tactics that was anything but basic.

Schumer opened the show with a sharp, irreverent and self-deprecating video segment that riffed on favorite Oscars host Billy Crystal‘s most famous bit. The comedienne inserted herself within a montage of clips parodying characters and scenes from the year’s most talked about films, including Boyhood, Pitch Perfect, Whiplash and the night’s big winner The Fault in Our Stars, which Schumer later joked in her monologue should have been titled “Cancer Schmancer.”

Of course, rising star Schumer also couldn’t help but take advantage of her relatively modest fame, using herself as one of the night’s ripest punchlines.

“Half of you don’t know who I am, and half of you think I’m Meghan Trainor,” she exclaimed on stage. “Pretty psyched about that.”

Despite a few inevitable misfires, especially Zac Efron and Dave Franco‘s warmed-over Neighbors banter (complete with Efron’s Travis Bickle costume from the movie) and a woefully lame bow-and-arrow bit in which Schumer tried — and failed — to get her Katniss Everdeen on, the show generated just one GIF-able moment after another.

Highlights included Generation Award winner Robert Downey Jr. telling kids to “keep your nose clean” while his fellow Avengers all took a knee in support of their co-star, and Jennifer Lopez giving  epic side-eye to Schumer’s Gone Girl joke:

“How good was Gone Girl?” Schumer declared. “It’s the story of what one crazed white woman — or every Latina — does when a man cheats on them.”

Schumer’s kiss-cam makeout session with Amber Rose (yes, really) set social media ablaze instantly, and Channing Tatum‘s brief twerking demonstration prompted Schumer’s raciest quip of the night:

“It really is magic,” she began, talking about Tatum’s upcoming Magic Mike sequel. “Whenever I watch those guys, two of my fingers disappear. It’s so weird!”

Meanwhile, Pitch Perfect 2 star Rebel Wilson gave Schumer a run for her money as the night’s most razor-tongued female, introducing a sneak peek at the highly-anticipated comedy as “an exclusive clit.”

Aca-scuse me?

The show wasn’t devoted entirely to laughs and shock value, however. Kevin Hart brought his two kids onstage while accepting his Comedic Genius award, and watching the funnyman’s son Hendrix proudly hold a popcorn statuette the size of his head likely sparked a smile from even the most ardent skeptics.

And finally, Shailene Woodley‘s scattered but sincere speech for her Trailblazer Award prompted tears from The Fault in our Stars author John Green, who knows a thing or two about making people cry.
