The reality show this season goes through the making of a movie called Not Another Pretty Woman, and yes, good ol’ Matt had a classic ‘insert foot into mouth’ scenario when he got into a seemingly casual discussion with Dear White People director Effie Brown regarding diversity and he bluntly inadvertently said this:
Matt Damon speaking over the only black person in the room so he can explain diversity to her is SO WHITE it hurts pic.twitter.com/iaQStYZ0ij
#Damonsplaining has taught us that Hollywood has a long way to go in having diversity in front of & behind the camera. — Alexandria (@TheNerdyNatural) September 15, 2015
Oh. No. He. Didn’t! Not only did he (and the rest of the group) shut down her the point of working around racial stereotypes in main characters, but going a step further in saying “you do in the casting of the film, not in the casting of [Project Greenlight.]”.
Wow. Just wow.
In the film industry, there has clearly been a lack of diversity both in front and behind the camera, and off colored remarks like this, especially by such a high profile celebrity and industry role model like Damon, demonstrates the LACK of diversity and views we still have in Hollywood.
Twitter took to action with the hashtag #Damonsplaining:
Dear Matt: while you’re at it, maybe you could give me some tips on being more Indian or better yet, being a woman #Damonsplaining
