The tea just keeps spillin’ from Mariah Carey’s memoir, The Meaning of Mariah! The R&B diva revealed that two of her classic love songs from her iconic 1997 album Butterfly, “The Roof” and “My All”, were about her love for her then-boyfriend, Derek Jeter.
Although Mariah was still in a rocky marriage to Tommy Mottola, she and Derek started their secret relationship after meeting at a dinner party and later exchanging texts. “The Roof” was inspired by their first kiss which happened on a rooftop at Derek’s apartment.
“I can never forget that moment,” she told Vulture. “I mean, it’s not like it was some intensely deep, intellectually stimulating — again, it was a great moment, and it happened in a divine way because it helped me get past living there, in Sing Sing, under those rules and regulations.”
She also revealed that when she sang the lyrics “I’d risk my life to feeeeyall / Your body next to mine,” in “My All,” she was alluding to risking it all just to spend one night with Derek in Puerto Rico!
