With the recent outcries for justice and equality against police brutality, people are demanding that statues representing white supremacy and racism be replaced with true local and influential heroes. A petition, that garnered over 14,000 signatures over the weekend wants the Confederate statue in Louisiana to be replaced with “an actual Louisiana hero and influential human being, Britney Spears,” Page Six reports. As Britney is a Kentwood, Louisana-native, the petition includes her many contributions to the state.
Tennesee has followed suit with their own petition to replace the statue of former KKK grand wizard, Nathan Bedford Forrest, with the Locust Ridge, TN’s native and “true Tennessee hero” country superstar, Dolly Parton. Highlighting Parton’s “beautiful music” and “philanthropic heart”, Alex Parsons started the petition to “replace the statues of men who sought to tear this country apart with a monument to the woman who has worked her entire life to bring us closer together,”NME reports.
What do you think of these states’ petitioning to remove figures of the confederacy and replace with local celebs?
