The awards show hosted by the trio we never saw coming—Nicki Minaj, LL Cool J, and Jack Harlow—went down at the Prudential Center in Newark, New Jersey, and per usual, it did not disappoint!
After bringing Missy Elliott “The Rain” realness to the red carpet in a Jean Paul Gaultier’s Spring/Summer 2022 couture gown, Lizzo set fire to the stage with a performance of her smash hit “About Damn Time” and new song “2 B Loved (Am I Ready).” She also snagged the award for Video for Good and clapped at comedian Aries Spears who recently body-shamed her.
“And now, to the b****** that got something to say about me in the press…You know what? I’m not gonna say nothing,” she said in her speech.’They be like, Lizzo, why don’t you clap back? Why don’t you clap back?’ Cause b**** I’m winning, hoe. Big b**** is winning, hoe!”
Lil Nas X channeled his inner Black Swan in a Harris Reed-designed feathered ensemble, made with upcycled materials and upholstery fabric, that surely made him the “Scoop” on the red carpet, CNN reports. Out of his seven noms, he racked up Best Collaboration, Best Art Direction, and Best Visual Effects for “Industry Baby” featuring rapper Jack Harlow.
Taylor Swift broke the record for the most Video of the Year awards after snagging her third for her All Too Well: The Short Film. She also sent the Swifties in a spiral after announcing her new album Midnights will be dropping on October 21st.
After her grand return to the VMAs stage after a 4-year hiatus, Nicki Minaj served up a sizzlin’ medley-style performance of some of her greatest hits i.e., “Roman’s Revenge,” “Beez in the Trap,” “Anaconda,” “Super Bass,” and more. The Queen rapper also accepted the well-deserved iconic Michael Jackson Video Vanguard Award and in addition to shouting out her adorable son PapaBear and The Barbz, she paid homage to musical greats Lil Wayne, Foxy Brown, Jay-Z, Lauryn Hill, Kanye West, Drake, Rihanna, and more, for inspiring and helping her career.
