The Oscar winner used his Twitter and Instagram to draw attention to the endangered vaquita porpoises in hopes of getting Mexico’s President to listen.
Estimates say there may be as little as 30 porpoises left in the world, which live off the coast of the North American country’s shores.
The World Wildlife Fund has a petition that calls on Mexican President Enrique Peña Nieto to establish a permanent ban on gill nets, which is how poachers primarily capture the fish in order to make medicine in China.
But after the actor sent out his SOS via social media, the President took notice.
“Mexico has focused all its efforts to prevent the extinction of this species,” Peña Nieto wrote.
