‘IT DIDN’T WORK OUT’—TARAJI P HENSON BREAKS HER SILENCE ON BREAKUP WITH EX-FIANCÉ, KELVIN HAYDEN
Monday, Oct 19, 2020

After much speculation, Taraji P. Henson confirms she and her fiancé, former NFL player Kelvin Hayden, are no longer together after their two-year engagement. During an interview on The Breakfast Club, Taraji explained that their relationship “didn’t work out” because they were “not on the same page” regarding therapy and actively dealing with their personal traumas.

“And I’m dedicated to the black man, y’all. I just turned 50 and…I haven’t said it yet, but it didn’t work out. You know what I mean? And I tried I was like ‘therapy, let’s do the therapy thing,’ but if you’re both not on the same page with that then you feel like you’re taking it on yourself and that’s not a fair position for anybody to play in a relationship,” Taraji shared.

The Empire star, who seemingly implied that she was the one who took on the weight of the entire relationship, emphasized the importance of personal responsibility when it comes to happiness and showing up in relationships.

My happiness is not his responsibility and his happiness is not mine. We have to first learn how to make ourselves happy to make each other happy. And so when one person is taking on the weight of the entire relationship, it’s never going to work.

Taraji and Kelvin got engaged in May 2018 after three years of dating. After bringing in her 50th birthday last month on a yacht with no Kelvin or engagement ring in sight, fans speculated if they were still together.

What do you think of Taraji’s perspective on relationships and therapy?
