Serena Williams’ dream to secure her 24th Grand Slam title—equaling rival Margaret Court’s record—didn’t come true after a 6-3 6-4 loss to 23-year-old Naomi Osaka at the Australian Open semi-finals. After the devastating loss to Osaka, Serena was seemingly solemn when asked about the speculations surrounding her retirement, and her overall performance at the semi-finals. Soon after admitting she made “easy mistakes” during the match, a teary-eyed Serena walked out of the post-match press conference.
She later took to Instagram to share a moving post dedicated to her devoted fans.
“Melbourne and my Australian fans- Today was not ideal outcome or performance but it happens…” Serena shared. “I am so honored to be able to play in front of you all. Your support -your cheers, I only wish I could have done better for you today. I am forever in debt and grateful to each and every single one of you. I love you. I love you. I love you. I adore you.”
Serena didn’t confirm nor deny speculation that she will be retiring soon. When asked she said, “If I ever say farewell I wouldn’t tell anyone.” Do you think this is the end of the road for Serena Williams? Tune in to see what our Dish Nation hosts think.
