HEAD DOGG IN CHARGE! SNOOP DOGG IS ‘BACC ON DEATH ROW’ RECORDS—ACQUIRES LABEL THAT LAUNCHED HIS CAREER
Thursday, Feb 10, 2022
Snoop Dogg is “Bacc on Death Row,” but this time he’s the head Dogg in charge!
Death Row Records, founded in 1992 by Dr. Dre, Suge Knight, the D.O.C., and Dick Griffey, has officially been acquired by none other than former labelmate Snoop Dogg. In a statement, The Doggfather said he was thrilled for the opportunity to own such a cultural touchstone that still has “untapped future value.”
“I am thrilled and appreciative of the opportunity to acquire the iconic and culturally significant Death Row Records brand, which has immense untapped future value…This is an extremely meaningful moment for me,” Snoop stated.
Snoop, who rose to fame in the ’90s with his classic debut album Doggstyle, was one of Death Row Records pioneers alongside legendary labelmates like Tupac, Nate Dogg, Warren G, Michel’le, and more. Notoriously known for their visceral and violent practices, Death Row Records began to crumble in the wake of Tupac’s death in 1996 and ultimately went bankrupt in 2006. Since then, the label landed in the hands of Blackstone and MNRK Music Group prior to recently being acquired by Snoop.
This news comes a few days before Snoop Dogg, Dr. Dre, Eminem, Mary J. Blige and Kendrick Lamar’s sure-to-be legendary Super Bowl performance this Sunday. And if that wasn’t enough to look forward to, Snoop will be dropping a new album B.O.D.R. on Friday for the pregame, which includes track “Bacc on Death Row” featuring fellow rap legend, Nas.
