Halle Berry is feelin’ the heat after considering a transgender role. She expressed interest in playing a transgender male on Instagram Live, and despite not dropping any details about this new project her excitement to “deep dive” into this character and use of pronouns drew a barrage of backlash. Halle has since issued an apology to the transgender community and vows to be an “ally” to “promote better representation on-screen.”
“Over the weekend, I had the opportunity to discuss my consideration of an upcoming role as a transgender man, and I’d like to apologize for those remarks,” Halle expressed. “As a cisgender woman, I now understand that I should not have considered this role, and that the transgender community should undeniably have the opportunity to tell their own stories,” People reports.
The remarks that got her in hot water happened during an IG Live interview with her hairstylist Christin Brown, wherein regards to playing a transgender male she emphasized the importance of sharing the “female story.”
“Who this woman was is so interesting to me, and that will probably be my next project, and that will require me cutting all of my hair off,” Halle told Brown. “It changes to a man, but I want to understand the why and how of that. I want to get into it.”
Do you agree that Halle considering a transgender role was offensive to the transgender community?
