Four and a half years after a comatose Rick Grimes awoke in the land of The Walking Dead, AMC has finally given fans of the record breaking series their first look at the zombie apocalypse from an entirely new perspective.

EXCLUSIVE: ‘The Walking Dead’ Star Danai Gurira’s Hairy Dilemma

The now-titled Walking Dead companion series premiered its first trailer during the earth-shattering conclusion of Walking’s fifth season Sunday. And, in case you had any doubts of the spin-off’s lack of a comic-book foundation, the trailer works hard to renew your fear of the undead.

Go ahead and watch the blood soaked footage below … if you’ve got the stomach for it.

Starring Gone Girl star and House of Cards newcomer Kim Dickens, Fear the Walking Dead has already been picked up for two seasons that’ll begin airing this summer on AMC and continue in 2016.

AMC president Charlie Collier has stated that the series, which is set in Los Angeles and focuses on wholly original characters, will explore “what was going on in other parts of the zombie apocalypse, and what it looked like as the world really did ‘turn.'”

Writer-producer Robert Kirkman elaborated on the series further at SXSW earlier this month, explaining that it would serve as a prequel and counterpart to the original.

“The timeline is taking place a little bit earlier than the original show. Rick Grimes woke up from a coma and was like, ‘Oh, man, zombies, weird!’ We’re going to possibly see that unfold a little more in the other show. But I wouldn’t call it ‘prequel’ because the entirety of the show is not going take place before [The Walking Dead]. It will eventually form a path running concurrently.”

Fear the Walking Dead premieres this summer on AMC.
