The State Department is not rockin’ with Dennis Rodman’s plan to go help “wrongfully detained” WNBA star Brittney Griner, who’s serving a 9-year prison sentence in Russia.
Just days after Rodman said he “got permission” to travel to Russia to “go help that girl [Brittney Griner],” who was detained for having vape cartridges containing cannabis oil, State Department spokesman Ned Price set the record straight on the U.S. government’s stance on Rodman’s travel plans.
“Well, we have seen through the media, and really only through the media, that Dennis Rodman has said he does intend to travel to Russia. He — I want to be clear, he is — he would not be traveling on behalf of the U.S. government,” Price said. He continued, “We put forward a substantial proposal to Russia to seek the freedom of Paul Whelan and Brittney Griner. We believe that anything other than negotiating further through the established channel is likely to complicate and hinder those release efforts,” Fox News reports.
Price took it a step further and reiterated the State Dept.’s Level 4 travel advisory that urges Americans not to travel to Russia at this time due to the “unprovoked and unjustified invasion of Ukraine by Russian military” and potential “harassment against U.S. citizens by Russian government.”
