DEDICATION TO DIVERSITY: 5 MEMORABLE MOMENTS FROM THE 2018 EMMY AWARDS
Tuesday, Sep 18, 2018

Last night’s 2018 Emmys was filled with some pretty memorable moments. The Game of Thrones and Marvelous Mrs. Maisel wins and surprise marriage proposal were at the show’s surface, but just underneath were memorable moments dedicated to diversity.

Jennifer Lewis stood in solidarity with Colin Kaepernick’s social movement against racial injustice. Wearing a bedazzled Nike sweatshirt, the Black-ish star praised Nike’s support for Colin while urging other corporations to follow suit. The star-studded opening number “We Solved It” and the show’s hosts, Michael Che and Colin Jost, addressed Hollywood’s lack of diversity head on—satirically of course. Che went on to dedicate Reparation Emmys to black TV legends who’ve been overlooked by the awards show and those alike, such as Martin’s Tichina Arnold, A Different Worlds’ Kadeem Hardison, The Jeffersons’ Marla Gibbs, Family Matters’ Jaleel White and The Wayans Bros’ John Witherspoon.

And who could forget the iconic “Wakanda” moment between Tiffany Haddish and Black Panther’s Angela Bassett?
