When Brian McKnight said he’ll start back at one, he wasn’t playing.
Social media slammed the “Back at One” R&B crooner for posting a seemingly “petty” post about his stepdaughter making him a “Girl Dad” and being the “best daughter ever” when he has four adult biological children, including a daughter.

Brian’s Instagram bio says he’s a husband to his current wife Leilani McKnight and father to his stepchildren Julia, Jack, and Kekoa Matteo, and son Brian Kainoa Makoa he shares with his wife, but there’s no mention of his four biological kids—three sons Brian Jr, Niko, and Clyde, and daughter Brianna—he had from his previous relationships.
In 2019, McKnight addressed claims he was a bad dad who neglected his biological black kids—saying he’s never done anything bad to his kids and has always supported them, and didn’t cut them off financially until his older biological sons, Brian Jr and Niko, were 25 and 22 years old.
“I’ve never missed a day of child support. I’ve never done anything adverse to my children whatsoever. I’ve always been there. I’ve always been there with advice, whether they took it or not. I have always been the sounding board and I’ve always been the one who had to help them achieve whatever dreams that they were wanting to reach out for,” Brian said in the video.
Brian also said he’s guilty of “entitling” his kids and gave his two older sons two years to get on their feet and take care of themselves, which he said they failed to do.
