Today is the day we pay respect to Martin Luther King, Jr. and his endless activism during the Civil Rights Movement.
In light of today’s celebrations, check out 8 actors who had the honor of playing King on the big screen… and even the broadway stage!

1.) Paul Winfield (1978 – King)
Winfield took on the role of MLK Jr. for the miniseries, King. It earned an outstanding 8 Emmy nominations .
2.) James Earl Jones (1982 – Freedom to Speak)
Another miniseries, this time with King being played by James Earl Jones.
*Fun Fact: Jones also played Frederick Douglass in Freedom to Speak as well!
3.) Jeffrey Wright (2001 – Boycott)
This film depicts the experiences of Rosa Parks and her interactions with political figures such as King. Jeffrey Wright took home an NAACP award for his portrayal in this movie!
4.) Dexter Scott King (2002 – The Rosa Parks Story)
King’s very own son, Dexter, played his late father in the 2002 biopic about Rosa Parks. All the feels.
5.) Samuel L. Jackson (2011 – The Mountaintop (Broadway)
That’s right! Jackson played MLK Jr. on broadway back in 2011. The Mountaintop is set entirely in room 306 and is centralized on the very last night of King’s life.
6.) Malik Yoba (2013 – Betty and Coretta)
Malik Yoba wasn’t the only big name in this 2013 hit. Angela Bassett AND Mary J. Blige were amongst some of the biggest names, earning the film 3 NAACP nominations.
7.) David Oyelowo (2014 – Selma)
This list certainly wouldn’t be complete without Oyelowo. His phenomenal take on MLK’s character won him an NAACP award.
