The live-action remake of Disney’s ‘Beauty And The Beast‘ starring Emma Watson and Dan Stevens is causing a beast of a controversy in Russia, due to “elements of propaganda of homosexuality.” Russian lawmaker Vitaly Milonov, demanded through a letter to his country’s government, to ban the fantasy film for being “a blatant, shameless propaganda of sin and perverted sexual relationships.”
According to CNN, The Ministry of Culture has not responded or ruled against the film, which is set to open in Russian theaters on March 16.
The scene that’s causing so much stir is at the end of the film, showing character LeFou embracing another man during a celebratory dance among other characters. It only lasts a few seconds.
In case you’re not familiar with Russian anti-gay policies, there is a law prohibiting the spreading of “gay propaganda” among minors; which called homosexuality “non-traditional sexual relations.”
Milonov has been very involved in Russia’s anti-gay laws and is known for calling lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people “sick” and “crazy.”
This has caused controversy in the U.S., as well. CNN reported that a drive-in theater in Alabama also banned the “Beauty and the Beast” movie because of its apparent gay content. This was the primary influence in Milonov’s decision.
In a now deleted Facebook post, the Henagar Drive-In Theatre said they could not compromise the Bible’s teachings and that they had to show family-oriented films without sex, nudity, homosexuality and foul language.
In a recent press conference, director Bill Condon referred to the new plot where LeFou has a crush on Gaston.
“I talked before about how we translate this into live-action. That means building out the characters. It’s also a translation to 2017, you know?” He said. “And what is the movie about? What has this story always been about for 300 years? It’s about looking closer, going deeper, accepting people for who they really are.”
So, do you think that Russia will end up banning ‘Beauty And The Beast’?
