TARAJI P. HENSON STANDS UP FOR WOMEN OVER 40January 10, 2018
Taraji P. Henson is not here for ageist attitudes in Hollywood.
The fierce actress is speaking out about playing an action star at the age of 47 in her new movie Proud Mary.
“The reason I had to do this film was because usually women after we get 40 they send us out to pasture,” she said on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon. “My point is we see men of all ages over 40 … and they always get these heroic roles. Why don’t you see women like this? All of my friends in the industry look amazing and they’re quite athletic. Why aren’t we all in films like this every year.” PREACH!
In the film, Henson plays a professional hitman working for a Boston crime family. And while the movie’s trailer caused a sensation when it was released online last year, Sony has been getting backflash for failing to properly promote the action thriller.
Henson recently addressed her frustration with how Hollywood studios fail to market films with black leads internationally because they don’t feel they will do well abroad.
“[Studios] never expect [black films] to do well overseas,” she told The Hollywood Reporter. “Meanwhile, you go overseas and what do you see? People trying to look like African-Americans with Afros and dressing in hip-hop fashions. To say that black culture doesn’t sell well overseas, that’s a lie. Somebody just doesn’t want to do their job and promote the film overseas. “
Whether playing Cookie Lyon, a NASA mathematician or a badass killer, we are so here for Taraji!
You can check out Taraji slaying the game alongside Danny Glover and Billy Brown (How to Get Away With Murder) when Proud Mary hits theaters on Friday.
