Rock music icon Tom Petty has died, his daughter confirmed on Monday in an Instagram post. He was 66.

The singer was rushed to the hospital on Sunday evening after being found unconscious at his Malibu home.

Petty was in cardiac arrest and not breathing when EMT arrived on the scene. After being transported to UCLA Santa Monica Hospital he was put on life support and his pulse returned.

A decision was later made to remove him from life support after it was determined there was no brain activity.

The singer was best known as the front man of rock group Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers and had a string of hits including “American Girl,” “Refugee” and “Don’t Come Around Here Anymore.”

Some of his biggest solo hits include “I Won’t Back Down,” “Free Fallin'” and “Runnin Down a Dream.”

Petty was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2002.

Just last week, the singer wrapped up his most recent North American tour.
