30-Minute Moonshine? Rachael Ray Is Cookin’ Up Homemade HoochJanuary 2, 2015
Rachael Ray may live in The Big Apple, but she’s a down home country girl at heart who loves to kick back and drink homemade moonshine!
Dish Nation has exclusively learned the bubbly talk show host and her husband John Cusimano love hooch so much that they have their own distillery at their upstate New York home.
“Rachael and John have a make-shift distillery in their backyard which they make homemade moonshine with,” a source told Dish.
“Whenever she’s got a break from filming her talk show, she can be found working in her distillery!”
Ray, 46 — who has been married to Cusimano since 2005 — opened up about her family’s history with the once-outlawed (and strong!) beverage during an interview.
“My grandfather ran liquor during Prohibition, and he made some good hooch,” she revealed, and added that she began drinking at an early age.
“He’d put wine in my baby bottle because I didn’t like milk or formula, and I’d get rosy cheeks and pass out,” the cookbook author told New York magazine. “He thought I was a good baby. Basically, I was just drunk.”
According to the source, Ray’s favorite show is Discovery Channel’s Moonshiners — a reality show that follows a group of people who live in the Appalachian Mountains and make moonshine.
“Rachael loves Moonshiners … she never misses an episode! Aside from coming up with her own recipes through trial and error, she gets many from the show,” the source dished.
“Rachael loves all flavors of moonshine. When she’s stressed, she loves to wind down with a hard, smokey flavor. But occasionally she’ll sweeten it up with a fruit flavor like strawberry. She even incorporates moonshine into many of her food recipes. Rachael makes a great barbecue sauce with moonshine!”
In addition to her large moonshine collection at home, the Food Network star wants to share her passion with the world by releasing her own moonshine line.
“Rachael has an entire book full of moonshine recipes, and her dream would be to publish it,” the insider said.
“She’d also love to start her own alcohol line of moonshine, similar to Bethenny Frankel‘s Skinny Girl. She’s sure it’d be a hit!”
