WHY MUSIC HAS GOTTEN SADDER OVER THE LAST 30 YEARSMay 26, 2018
Do you love sad songs? Just like Sam Smith said, “I know I’m not the only one!”
A new study finds that music has taken a darker turn in the last thirty years. Researchers studied 500,000 songs released from 1985 to 2015 and categorized the songs by mood.
“Happiness’ is going down, ‘brightness’ is going down, ‘sadness’ is going up, and at the same time, the songs are becoming more ‘danceable’ and more ‘party-like.”
At least we like our sadness with a beat! Rock music’s popularity has dwindled over time as well.
“While the overall mood is becoming less happy, people seem to want to forget it all and dance.”
Plus, if you forgot who runs the world (Hint: Girls.), people prefer female musicians.
“Successful songs are characterized by a larger percentage of female artists compared to all songs.”
