Meet Jim Mandell, aka, Miles Doppler, the man behind the iconic voice of the original “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles” theme song.
Jim came into Dish Nation’s headquarters to chat about, and more importantly sing, the “TMNT” theme that still resonates with an entire generation.
How did you get involved in singing the theme song?
I was a recording artist and session singer in the 80’s and got a call to come in and sing a tune with a “wacky” lyric. We thought, Oh, THIS is nuts.
What’s the weirdest TMNT fan experience you’ve had?
A young woman at an industry party opened her jacket to reveal her costume, turned around and asked me to sign her SHELL.
What’s the best thing about being “the voice” of a generation of kids who grew up watching TMNT?
It’s a blast of nostalgia for a lot of people. They really love to remember watching in their Turtle PJ’s and all their childhood role playing.
Do you ever break out into song at parties?
Yes, with a little prodding. It’s really fun because they recognize my voice from all the times they’ve heard it and bust out with big smiles and nods.
Has singing the theme opened any Hollywood doors?
I’ve gotten a little attention here and there, but I’m more interested in getting my new work heard.
Perfect segue, what are you working on now?
I’m recording a high-concept song album, about what life will be like a couple hundred years in the future — relationships, hi-tech, crazy aliens — check it out online @ milesdoppler.com!
