MARGOT ROBBIE DIDN’T KNOW TONYA HARDING DRAMA WAS REALSeptember 11, 2017
Margot Robbie was just three years old (damn her!) when the whole Tonya Harding/Nancy Kerrigan ice-skating drama took place in January 1994.
If you couple her young age with the fact that she is from Australia, then you might understand why the actress wasn’t familiar with the scandal.
But it wasn’t until after she read the script to play Harding in the upcoming biopic I Tonya that she realized the entire incident actually happened.
“To be honest, when I read the script, I didn’t know who Tonya Harding was, and I didn’t realize it was a true story,” the 27-year-old told Vanity Fair. “I thought it was entirely fictionalized and our writer Steve was so creative to come up with the quirky characters and absurd incidents.”
To play the role of Harding, Robbie memorized hours and hours of interviews and skating routines in order to get the embattled athlete’s mannerisms down to a science.
Robbie only met Harding after filming and described the experience as surreal.
“It was a bizarre experience. She was so kind. I was taken aback by how worried she was about me, weirdly. After all the things she has been through, she just kept asking if I was O.K.”
I, Tonya is set to be released next year and co-stars Sebastian Stan and Allison Janney.
