LOCAL POLICE ARE NOT SMARTER THAN A 5th GRADERFebruary 22, 2017
An Ohio 5th grader turned to her local police department for help with her math homework and soon realized she’d be better off on her own. You have the right to an incorrect answer!
Lena Draper reached out to the Marion,Ohio PD through their Facebook page for help with the math problem (8 + 29) x 15. A member of the force answered back writing: “Do the numbers in the parenthesis first so in essence it would be 37 x 15.” Correct!
But after taking their advice, Lena got overzealous and into trouble when she asked help for the more complicated equation: “(90 + 27) + (29 + 15) x 2.” Um, yikes!
Thinking it had this in the bag, the police department responded: “Take the answer from the first parenthesis plus the answer from the second parenthesis and multiply that answer by two.” Sounds right, right? Wrong!
Believe it or not, the correct answer is to add the numbers in the second parentheses and multiply that answer by 2, then add it to the numbers in the first parentheses. For reals?!
While the cops made a valiant try, Lena’s mother was just happy that her local police tried to help.
“I didn’t believe her and asked for a screen shot. I thought it was pretty funny. And I love that they went ahead with it,” she said.
Must be nice to live in a place where the police have time to help with a child’s homework!
