There’s no skating around this issue!

Kristi Yamaguchi caused a social media meltdown after she used a bad choice of words to send well wishes to fellow Olympic figure skater Nancy Kerrigan, prior to her premiere on Dancing with the Stars.

“So excited for you @NancyAKerrigan! Can’t wait to see you grace that ballroom floor, break a leg! #DWTS,” the 45-year-old wrote on Twitter.

That tweet gets the gold!

While Yamaguchi – who won DWTS back in 2008 – most likely had good intentions, fans couldn’t help associate the word phrasing with Kerrigan’s 1994 attack at the hands of the husband of then-rival Tonya Harding.

Kerrigan was struck in her right knee with a baton just prior to the ’94 Olympics. The assailant was found to have been hired by Harding‘s then-husband Jeff Gillooly and bodyguard at the time.

After the attack, Kerrigan was famously heard screaming, “Why, why, why?”

Following the tweet, fans unleashed a barrage of memes and gifs showing shock and awe and overall hilarity.

But Kerrigan didn’t seem fazed by the controversy and tweeted back: “Thank you so much Kristi! I’m excited to get this started said for the advice you had for me. this its a blast!”

Yamaguchi has yet to official respond or comment on the situation.

Do you think Yamaguchi’s verbiage was an honest mistake or was she trying to be funny?
