WATCH: JAY-Z REMAKES ‘FRIENDS’ IN NEW ‘MOONLIGHT’ MUSIC VIDEO

August 11, 2017

After being exclusively released on Tidal for a week, Jay-Z‘s all-black remake of Friends has finally arrived for the rest of the world to see.

While it’s technically the music video for his song “Moonlight,” the actual track doesn’t come on until the last quarter of the clip.

The bulk of the video is a shot-for-shot recreation of the hit NBC series’ season three episode “The One Where No One’s Ready.”

Insecure star Issa Rae plays Rachel, Westworld‘s Tessa Thompson is Monica, Girls Trip breakout actress Tiffany Haddish is Phoebe, Lakeith Stanfield (Get Out) is Chandler, Lil Rel plays Joey and The Carmichael Show‘s Jerrod Carmichael takes the lead as Ross.

Instead of the ubiquitous “I’ll Be There For You” theme song, 1984 rap hit “Friends” by Whodini is featured during the parody of the opening montage.

The end of the video includes audio from this year’s Academy Awards when La La Land was erroneously announced as the winner of Best Picture instead of Moonlight (hence the title.)

Directed by Master on None co-creator Alan Yang, the video has been getting rave reviews for its commentary on diversity and racism in Hollywood and even brought Jay-Z to tears when he first saw it.

It’s must-see TV!
