DESIGNER EXPLAINS THE MEANING OF ISSA RAE’S BELTJune 7, 2018
Issa Rae was the first Black female to host the CFDA Fashion Awards and rocked the red carpet in a sparkly blue jumpsuit designed by Kerby Jean-Raymond for Pyer Moss. However, it was the accessory she wore with the jumpsuit that has everyone talking.
The Insecure star wore a belt that said, “Every N***a Is a Star.” Designer Jean-Raymond opened up about the controversial addition that was meant to highlight the positive experience of being black rather than “tragic figures.”
“We never talk about who they love, people with their children and their love for their families. It’s always a tragic figure or as firsts—first black man to do this, first black person to do this—but what about just a bus driver? We don’t have to be Jay-Z, we don’t have to be Kerby Jean-Raymond, we don’t have to be Issa Rae, we can just be who we are and just exist and we’re still superstars in our own rights, no matter what we do.”
If you’re offended by the use of the N-word in his fashion, don’t complain to him.
“If you don’t get it, it’s not for you. If you don’t get it, you weren’t supposed to. It’s not meant to be political. It’s meant to be uplifting.”
Go off, Issa!
