EXCLUSIVE: EWAN McGREGOR MAY REPRISE ‘STAR WARS’ ROLE IN NEW FILMJune 13, 2017
By James Desborough and Brodie Cooper
Ewan McGregor will learn whether he will “Return As A Jedi” – his famous character Obi Wan Kenobi – in the next few days.
Disney executives are close to signing off on a second spin-off flick of the sci-fi saga after weeks of deliberation.
Insiders claim that the movie studio’s chiefs and executive producers, Kathleen Kennedy and JJ Abrams are considering an Obi Wan plot, a stand-alone Boba Fett flick and even Yoda story among several project ideas.
The film is likely to hit the screen in 2020 as the final movie in the five-part Star Wars deal announced by Disney back in 2014.
However, fans may have to wait until next month for the official confirmation as Disney executives are toying with confirming it at their D23 Expo in Anaheim. The celebration event is a huge event for hardcore Star Wars fans with many star appearances streamed online worldwide.
Trainspotting star Ewan has spoken in recent months about his desire to return to play the Jedi master, 12 years after his last outing in Revenge Of The Sith.
A well placed Disney source said: “The next Star Wars film announcement is very close, and it is one which will send fans wild. Incredibly Ewan has been kept in the dark about their full scale plans, but given his public comments if they decide on Obi Wan coming back – everyone knows he will be on board. A small handful of Disney bosses led by Kathleen and JJ are deciding on the fifth film. It is by no means a lock in, as there has been talk of ideas for Boba Fett, Yoda and even speeding up a Han Solo sequel. It has been one of their toughest choices as there are so many big concepts in the pipeline. Technically, he could return as Obi Wan in an adventure centred on Boba Fett too; so there are lots of options. But the character Obi Wan and Ewan are hugely popular with fans worldwide so this would create huge buzz. However, while Ewan will learn the decision soon, fans may be kept waiting, as there is a feeling that the official announcement at D23 would be huge. At this stage script prep and pre-production will start in the autumn, along with getting a director and full cast with a plan to make the film next winter or early 2019.”
If Ewan gets the nod, the movie will continue Star Wars adventures after the end of the latest trilogy with Episode IX screening in 2019.
In April, Ewan admitted on US TV: “There’s no official offer, and I haven’t met them about it or anything. But I’ve always said that I’d be happy to do it if they wanted to do it. ”
He even admitted that he sees the adventure centering on a time after Revenge Of The Sith following his battle with Anakin Skywalker which led to his creation as Darth Vader.
“It would be a good segue between the last episode of the prequels and the new episodes.”
Ewan was secretly in The Force Awakens without fans really noticing. He revealed that he lent his voice as Obi Wan Kenobi to The Force Awakens during a dream sequence with Rey, played by Daisy Ridley.
However, director JJ Abrams mixed Ewan’s vocals with old words from Alec Guinness – the original Ben Kenobi.
Ewan said he was stunned that the filmmaker managed to revive Alec, given he had died over two decades ago.
“I recorded a line for it. It was very late in the day, I had been waiting for the call to come for two years.- maybe they’d lost my agent’s phone number! But I got a call just shortly before it was released from JJ and he said ‘I’d love you to part of it and to be in it. There’s a sequence where we can use a voice, we hear Obi-Wan Kenobi’s voice coming from the distant reaches of the forest or wherever it does come from. I was like I would love to be in it I have been waiting for your call. So I went in and I saw some of it before anyone else and I was very impressed with it.”
